Prime Minister David Cameron has urged Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to do "everything possible" to end the crisis in Gaza.

In a phone call with the Israeli PM, Mr Cameron also expressed sympathy for the "unacceptable rocket attacks" Israel has suffered from militants.

About 40 Palestinians and three Israelis have now been killed.

Pro-Palestinian protesters have gathered in Edinburgh and London to urge an end to the violence.

An Israeli air strike killed Hamas military chief Ahmed Said Khalil al-Jabari and another official in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday.

This air strike followed a wave of rocket attacks into Israel from the territory.

'Civilian casualties'

A Downing Street spokeswoman said Mr Cameron also "expressed concern" that the current trading of missile fire may turn into a ground war.

"The prime minister expressed his sympathy for the unacceptable rocket attacks that Israel continued to suffer.

"He also expressed concern over the risk of the conflict escalating further and the danger of further civilian casualties on both sides.

"The prime minister said that the UK was putting pressure on both sides to de-escalate and urged Prime Minister Netanyahu to do everything possible to bring the conflict to an end," she added.

Protesters earlier gathered outside the Israeli embassy in London to condemn the British government's stance on the conflict.

Foreign Secretary William Hague has said previously the Hamas regime in Gaza was responsible for the escalation of violence.

He urged both Israel and the Palestinians to make efforts to halt the growing conflict.

Trading fire

In the Scottish capital, Edinburgh on Saturday, hundreds of people took to the streets in a rally in support of the Palestinian people.

The march was supported by a number of groups, including the Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign, Stop the War and the Scottish Trades Union Congress.

In the early hours of Sunday morning, Israel began shelling Gaza from war ships out to sea and from air as the conflict entered its fifth day.

The BBC's Jon Donnison in Gaza City reported hearing about a dozen shells fall at around 02:00 (00:00 GMT).

Israel's army said on Saturday that about 500 rockets fired from Gaza had hit Israel, while another 245 had been intercepted by its Iron Dome missile defence system.

About 200 sites in Gaza were hit by Israeli rocket attacks overnight on Friday and into Saturday, including the office of Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniya.

Israel has put 75,000 military reservists on stand-by, on top of the 16,000 called up in recent days.

The Arab League has held an emergency meeting in the Egyptian capital Cairo, and announced it would send a delegation to Gaza in the coming days.

Meanwhile Egypt's President Mohammed Mursi said he had contacted both the Israelis and Palestinians.

During a meeting with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, President Mursi said there were "some indications" a truce could be reached but that there were "no guarantees".
