As many as 40 residents from an area of Denbigh in north-east Wales spent the night in a town hall after their homes were evacuated by police.

It followed the earlier arrest of a 46-year-old man after a spate of firework-like attacks in the town.

Explosive experts were called in to assist North Wales Police with a search of an address in the town.

The evacuation of properties in Lenten Pool was a safety precaution and residents have since been allowed home.

The operation on Friday followed a series of attacks involving what are thought to be homemade firework-type devices.

There have been more than a dozen separate incidents in the town since March, damaging cars and smashing some windows.

Safety checks

A spokesperson for North Wales Police on Friday night said that ordnance experts from Chester were called in to assist with the search of a property linked to the arrest on Friday.

The 46-year-old man is currently in custody while he is questioned at St Asaph.

The spokesperson added: "Safety of the public is of paramount importance, and we apologise for any disruption.

"We are grateful to the residents for their understanding and co-operation."
