Doctor Who, JLS and the cast of EastEnders are among the highlights of this year's Children in Need, which hopes to raise more than £26m.

Longstanding host Sir Terry Wogan will preside over the six-hour fund-raiser, along with Fearne Cotton, Tess Daly, Zoe Ball and Radio 1's Nick Grimshaw.

Proceedings kick off on BBC One at 19:30 GMT with a performance from the stars of West End musical Matilda.

Fund-raising events will be taking place all day around the UK.

Organisers hope to beat last year's on-the-night donations of £26.8m - a record high for the telethon, which has been running since 1980.

The 2013 show boasts an exclusive scene from the highly-anticipated 50th anniversary episode of Doctor Who.

It will also see skating stars Torvill and Dean test their skills on the Strictly Come Dancing dance floor, while comedian Frank Skinner will host a children's edition of Room 101.

The cast of EastEnders will perform dance routines in Albert Square as part of the televised show - which comes from the BBC's Elstree studios for the first time.

Live music will come from the likes of Ellie Goulding, Tinie Tempah and McBusted - the "supergroup" comprising members of boy bands McFly and Busted, who announced a 2014 tour earlier this week.

Sir Terry said: "Another year older and my childhood is almost ancient history, though memories from back then are very fond ones. I was lucky. Mine was a happy childhood but for many children in the UK, this isn't the case, which is why the BBC started Children in Need.

"Get involved. Go on, you know you want to. Together we can make 2013 our greatest year ever."

In the build-up to the show, some fundraising efforts have already begun.

The One Show's Rickshaw Challenge kicked off in Northern Ireland on 8 November, with participants cycling day and night to reach London in time for Friday night's edition of the magazine programme.

Host Alex Jones called it "one of the toughest things I've ever done" - but by Wednesday night the riders had already raised £514,832.

BBC Radio 4 is auctioning off several prizes, including the chance to read the shipping forecast, and the opportunity to sit in on the Today programme's editorial meeting.

And BBC Radio 3 has recorded two charity singles with the BBC Philharmonic and the Halle Orchestra. An all-female ensemble, conducted by Sian Edwards, has covered Little Mix's single Wings, combining it with Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries; while their male counterparts have mixed One Direction's What Makes You Beautiful with Verdi's Anvil Chorus.

Meanwhile, celebrities including Michelle Dockery, Fiona Bruce, Denise Lewis and Kimberley Walsh joined the public in a "no make-up" fundraising day last week.

The money raised by Children in Need is used to help disadvantaged children and young people across the UK.

Over the years, it has distributed more than £690m to charity projects around the country.
