Motorists are braced for what is set to be the busiest day of the year on the roads so far, with up to 16m cars expected to be used over Easter.

Traffic information firm Trafficmaster predicted that congestion over the holiday period would peak on Thursday.

There will also be disruption on the railways with an extensive programme of engineering works taking place.

The weather over the Easter weekend is forecast to start dry with sunny spells but turn increasingly wet on Sunday.

Road hotspots

The AA said this Easter was expected to be the one of the busiest on the roads in recent years, with mild weather replacing the snow and ice of last year.

Routes to the south-west of England were likely to be the busiest, it added.

The AA forecast that as many as 16 million cars would be on the move over the holiday.

According to Trafficmaster, the worst holiday hotspots are likely to be:

  • A303 westbound from M3/J8 through Hampshire, Wiltshire and Somerset
  • M1 from Junction 6A (M25 interchange) to Junction 13; and from Junction 23A to Junction 32 (M18)
  • M5 from Junction 15 (Almondsbury) towards Junction 31 (Exeter for West Country)
  • M6 through West Midlands (from Junction 4A) and northwards towards Lancashire (Junction 21A)
  • M25 all sections, especially both ways around J14/17 (Heathrow Airport and M4, M40 interchanges)

The AA said it would have a fifth more patrols on duty than normal to deal with extra breakdowns.

Network Rail said engineering work would take place at more than 3,000 locations over the Easter weekend, with almost 8km of track renewals taking place.

It will affect stations including Charing Cross, London Bridge, Paddington and King's Cross in London, Southampton Central and Sheffield.

Passengers are advised to check National Rail Enquiries for any timetable changes before they travel.

Rail industry body the Railway Delivery Group said 20% fewer bus replacement services would be needed compared with last Easter.

On London Underground, parts of the Bakerloo, District, Jubilee and Piccadilly lines, as well as London Overground, will be shut.

Eurostar is expecting to carry more than 130,000 passengers through the Channel Tunnel over the Easter weekend.

'Promising start'

Some 370,000 passengers are expected to fly from Heathrow airport, 200,000 from Gatwick and 120,000 from Stansted.

In the north of England, 110,000 will leave from Manchester airport and 100,000 from the Scottish airports.

Temperatures of up to 19C (66F), in London, are being forecast for Thursday.

The weather will become brighter in Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England, with temperatures of about 11C (52F) in Edinburgh and Belfast, and 9C (48F) in Cardiff.

BBC weather presenter John Hammond said: "It looks like being a promising start to the Easter weekend; if only it could stay that way. For some of us it will turn increasingly wet."

A survey by Visit England suggested that 3.4 million Britons were to planning go away within the UK over Easter, and 1.6 million heading abroad.
