Three of Britain's 2012 Olympic medallists will be the official starters of the 2014 London Marathon.

Rowers Katherine Grainger and Anna Watkins will push the red button to send 36,000 participants on their way, before running themselves.

Diver Tom Daley has started the Mini London Marathon, a three-mile race for young athletes.

Two-time Olympic medallist Mo Farah, 31, is one of the favourites to win the 26.2-mile capital course.

The Olympic and world champion at both 5,000m and 10,000m is running less than a month after collapsing at the end of the New York Half Marathon.

Bookmakers, William Hill, have installed Farah at 6/1 as he goes for Steve Jones' British record of two hours, seven minutes and 13 seconds, which has stood since 1985.

Rupert Adams from the company said: "Mo will almost certainly start as the best-backed runner in the history of the marathon."

The race's pacemaker, Haile Gebrselassie, has also been instructed to set up a world record attempt.

Also hoping to smash records is Paralympic champion David Weir, nicknamed the "Weirwolf", who is hoping to become the greatest wheelchair racer in the event's history by winning his seventh title.

The elite wheelchair races, which got under way at 08:55 BST, sees American Tatyana McFadden as one of the favourites to win the women's event.

Last month she won silver in cross-country skiing at Sochi's Winter Paralympics.

Thousands of fun-runners are also preparing to take on the event raising thousands of pounds for charity.

Celebrities including former Liverpool and England striker Michael Owen, Game of Thrones actress Natalie Dormer, and Michelin-star chef Michel Roux Jr are also donning their running shoes.

Race starters Grainger and Watkins, who won the women's double sculls gold at the London 2012 Games, are two of 13 London Games gold medallists who will be taking on the famous course from Blackheath to The Mall.
