Detectives have appealed to a hit-and-run driver whose car struck and killed a 14-year-old girl in Sheffield to "do the right thing and come forward".

"I am certain it is just a matter of time until we catch this driver," said Ch Insp Stuart Walne.

Jasmyn Chan and a 12-year-old friend were hit as they crossed Normanton Hill on Friday evening.

Jasmyn, a student at Birley Community College, died at the scene while the younger girl was taken to hospital.

Renewing his appeal to the driver, Mr Walne, of South Yorkshire Police, said officers had received a "steady flow of information" since Friday night.

They believe the car was probably damaged at the front and driver's offside in the crash, which happened near Richmond Park in the Intake area of Sheffield just before 21:30 BST.

"Put yourself in the situation that Jasmyn's family and friends are now in," he said.

"Think about what they are going through. Do the right thing and come forward."

The car involved is thought to have been small and dark-coloured, possibly green, and could have been a Volkswagen or Honda.

Police believe Jasmyn, known as Jazzy, was crossing Normanton Hill with four other friends and may have been going to the aid of the younger girl when they were hit.

The 12-year-old was released from hospital on Saturday.

'Bright, lively and popular'

Speaking on Saturday, Mr Walne said it was "a tragic situation that has taken a young life and seriously affected another".

"There may have been reasons that you didn't stop last night, but now a girl has died and we need to speak to you," he added.

Birley Community College executive head teacher Steve Robinson paid tribute to Jasmyn in a statement on the school website.

He said: "Our thoughts are with Jasmyn's family and friends at this very difficult time.

"As a school community we mourn the loss of a bright, lively and popular student who touched many lives."

He said the school would be providing support to pupils and would dedicate an area for flowers to be placed.

Floral tributes have also been left at the scene.

One read: "RIP Jasmyn. Cannot believe what has actually happened. Horrible things happen to innocent people. You were such a kind, lovely girl. Died a hero saving your friend's life."
