A man has been charged with armed robbery while being unlawfully at large from an open prison in Kent.

Michael Wheatley, 55, known as the "Skull Cracker", was arrested in London after a raid on a Chelsea Building Society branch in Sunbury in Surrey.

He faces a further charge of possessing a firearm or imitation firearm after Wednesday's raid, and is due before East Surrey Magistrates' Court later.

Kevin Perry, 53, of West India Dock Road, is also due to appear in court.

He is accused of assisting an offender, perverting the course of justice and handling stolen goods.

Surrey Police said Mr Wheatley had been charged with absconding from HMP Standford Hill on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent.

He had been on temporary licence and had been due to return at 18:00 BST on Saturday.

No-one was hurt during the raid on the building society branch in Staines Road, but a spokesman for the company said staff had been left shaken.
