A £200m investment which will create 250 new jobs has been announced at a Merseyside car plant.

Jaguar Land Rover said they will build the new Discovery Sport model at their Halewood plant.

The additional jobs will take the number of people employed at the Liverpool plant to 4,750. The plant already builds the Range Rover Evoque.

The new Land Rover model will go on sale in 2015.

Operations Director, Richard Else, said: "We have seen our work force treble and production quadruple in just four years."

He said the plant now runs for 24-hours a day, and operates three shifts.

Roger Maddison, from the Unite union, welcomed the creation of new jobs as good news for the North West and "a great boost for UK car manufacturing".

"Unite members have shown that they have the skills and commitment to make Land Rover the world leader that it is and the union looks forward to working with the company to create more high-skilled jobs in the future," he said.

In March a new £45m press line was opened at Halewood and the company said it had now installed 260 new automated robots, laser welding facilitates and new monitoring equipment.

About £500m has been invested at the factory over the last four years, a spokesman said.

The company also has bases in Castle Bromwich and Solihull in the West Midlands.
