Dozens of firefighters have spent the night battling a large blaze which broke out at an industrial site west of Glasgow.

The fire sent black smoke from burning tyres drifting across the city which could be seen for miles around.

It broke out at about 22:00 BST on Thursday near Meadowside Street on the banks of the River Clyde at Renfrew.

It is thought to have started in a scrapyard near a bus depot. It is now under control.

There have been no reports of injuries, but at its peak 15 fire appliances were at the scene and about 75 firefighters were battling the blaze.

There are still 55 firefighters at the scene.

Huge plumes of smoke filled the skyline and groups of people gathered to take photos and video of the fire.

The cloud could be seen from across much of the city.

A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: "Fire crews quickly attended the scene and were faced with a severe fire within an industrial recycling establishment.

"Due to the size and nature of the blaze the incident commander requested the attendance of additional resources.

Although the immediate area is mainly home to industrial units, the fire service advised residents in the area to keep their windows closed due to the large plume of smoke.

Police were also at the scene to keep onlookers away and put road closures in place.
