A fire in the undercarriage of a Gatwick Express train prompted the evacuation of London Victoria station at the start of the morning rush hour.
Gatwick Express said "mass disruption" was expected. The station partially re-opened after less than an hour once the fire was out and smoke had cleared.
National Rail said delays of about 50 minutes were expected until 10:00 GMT.
Southern Rail, responding to queries from customers on Twitter, said: "No-one was hurt which was good."
The train was empty at the time of the fire.
The London Fire Brigade sent two appliances to the station. British Transport Polices also said they were called to Victoria Station at 06:53 GMT to reports of a fire.
The fire was extinguished before 07:25 GMT, and trains were running from all platforms expect platforms 12-14.
The fire brigade was still dealing with the smoking train.
One commuter said he saw flames and black smoke coming from the train.
"There was just a little bit of flames by the wheels," Tom Edwards said.
"They put it out and then started chucking everybody out of the building. There was no panic. It could have got pretty bad if they hadn't done something about it straight away."
