A technical issue at Swanwick air traffic control centre is delaying flights at airports in UK and Ireland.

Stansted, Gatwick, Southampton and Dublin airports have reported delays.

Dublin Airport said on Twitter: "Technical issue with air traffic control in southern England is causing a delay to some flights to England & continental Europe this AM".

The airline Ryanair has warned there will be "significant flight delays and possible cancellations".

Ryanair said it had been advised of an equipment failure within UK air traffic control.

Gatwick and Southampton Airports have asked passengers to check with their airlines as some flights may be delayed.

Stansted Airport said glitches at the Swanwick centre, in Hampshire, were to blame for the delays.

Travel reporter Simon Calder told BBC Breakfast the flight delays were caused by switching air traffic control computers from "night to day configurations".

He said there were "lots and lots of delays" at Stansted, while Heathrow Airport had "long delays" of up to 40 minutes in departures.

Mr Calder said early morning delays could lead to cancellations later in the day.

"It is a pretty grim start to the weekend for air travellers," he told the BBC.

Heathrow is expected to make a statement shortly.
