Convicted Mafia boss Domenico Rancadore has been rearrested by police in west London just a month after he avoided extradition from the UK to Italy.

Rancadore, known as The Professor, was detained after a fresh European Arrest Warrant was received from Italy.

The warrant alleges the 65-year-old has an outstanding sentence of seven years to serve for "participation in Mafia association between 1987 and 1995".

Rancadore is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court later.

In March, Rancadore won a battle against extradition from the UK to Italy, when a judge ruled that prison conditions there would breach his human rights.

Later that month, he heard he would not face an appeal against that ruling because the Crown Prosecution Service had missed a deadline to lodge the appeal.

Following that missed deadline, District Judge Quentin Purdy granted him unconditional bail and told him he was free to go.
