Iain Watson reports: "If you were to beam down from outer space... you might be surprised to learn of the coalition"

Britain will be "diminished and divided" if the Tories are left to rule alone after next May's general election, Nick Clegg has said.

Opening the Lib Dem conference in Glasgow, Mr Clegg urged his Party to fight "tooth and nail" to prevent a Conservative or Labour government.

He warned a Labour majority would lead to more borrowing and debt.

Meanwhile, the chief secretary to the Treasury will claim Lib Dems should be credited for the economic recovery.

Danny Alexander will tell delegates later: "The Tories like to try to claim the credit for lots of our achievements, including the economic recovery.

"We have to set the record straight... We wrote the recovery plan.

'Core thinking'

"Cutting taxes for working people - a Liberal Democrat idea. A dramatic increase in apprenticeships - a Liberal Democrat idea. Record investment in renewable energy - a Liberal Democrat idea. A proper science and industrial strategy - a Liberal Democrat idea.

"Balancing the books, and doing so fairly. Absolutely core Lib Dem thinking.

"This recovery wouldn't be happening without Liberal Democrats in government, putting into action Liberal Democrat economic ideas delivering economic success for all our people."

Nick Clegg said his Party was the only one which could build "a stronger economy and a fairer society".

He pledged to introduce a number of measures if the Lib Dems are in government again next year, including:

  • Free school meals in primary schools
  • Cut-price bus travel for young workers
  • Extended paternity leave and free childcare
  • "Proper" funding for the NHS

But he warned the party faithful they would have to "fight tooth and nail" ahead of next year's vote.

'Botched EU negotiation'

Mr Clegg said: "Imagine again, if you can bear it, what it would be like in 2020, but this time with the Conservatives in government on their own.

"Britain, diminished and divided after a botched attempt to renegotiate our relationship with Europe and a vote to withdraw from the European Union.

"Companies pulling out of the UK left, right and centre, the markets losing confidence, hiking up our borrowing costs and halting the recovery in its tracks.

"The young and the working poor hit time and time again as George Osborne takes his axe to the welfare budget with no regard for the impact on people's lives."

He warned a Conservative leadership would be left "in hock to their right wing" with David Cameron "trapped between a poor man's Margaret Thatcher and a rich man's Nigel Farage".

And he claimed a Labour victory next May would mean a return to recession, soaring unemployment and a generation of young people "thrown back on the scrap heap."

Labour governing alone, he added, would mean "debt piling up and up until the day of reckoning comes, a recovery squandered, recession.

"Unemployment soars again, especially for the young. Fear, insecurity, opportunity stifled, hopes and aspirations killed stone dead.

"A generation thrown back on the scrap heap just when it looked like they had reason to be optimistic again, our children forced to pay for the mistakes of the generations before them."

Mr Clegg added: "We can't allow Labour to throw away our recovery. And we can't allow the Conservatives to put the interests of the few above the needs of the many.

'Nasty party'

"The only party that can build a stronger economy and a fairer society, so that everyone can have the opportunity to get on in life, is the Liberal Democrats."

He acknowledged the party, which has seen poll ratings as low as 6%, faced "the fight our of lives" at the election.

"Once again, we are the underdogs," he said. "Written off. Dismissed. Told that we can't make a difference.

"I don't know about you but I've heard this all before. We have upset the odds before and we will upset the odds again."

Former party leader Paddy Ashdown, meanwhile, told activists the Conservatives were "reverting to type" and had become the "nasty party again".

Lord Ashdown added: "Labour will screw the economy and the Tories will screw the weak. Well, here's our message - we won't let them do it."
