Two boys aged 13 and 14, killed when a car they were in hit a tree, have been named, along with two other teenagers left critically injured.
Rhys Baker, 13, and George Wharton, 14, were killed on the A62 Gelderd Road, in Morley, Leeds, on Saturday afternoon.
Kameron Walters, 14, and Joshua Van Veen, 15, suffered life-threatening injuries in the crash.
All were being driven by a 21-year-old man, who police believe had picked them up without their parents' permission.
He is in hospital in a serious but stable condition.
Kameron and Joshua are in a critical condition.
Police said the blue Peugeot car had left the road "at speed", crashing into a tree at about 13:50 GMT.
"This is a terrible tragedy for two young boys who had their whole lives ahead of them," said Supt Sam Millar of West Yorkshire Police.
"Specially trained officers are currently investigating the exact circumstances of the incident and helping the families in what is a terrible time for them."
She said the dead boys were from the local area and attended Bruntcliffe Secondary School and Morley Academy, which were also being supported by officers.
Supt Millar said the man was believed to have picked up the boys from their homes.
She said the car had been heading towards Gildersome and appealed for any witnesses who may have seen how it was being driven before the crash to come forward.
"We believe the car overtook another vehicle at speed and then collided with a tree on Gelderd Road near to the Finning premises," she said.
"We are appealing for any witnesses to the specific incident but also the movements and behaviour of the car during the rest of the day.
"We are particularly keen to speak to anyone who saw the vehicle at the Tesco Express store in Churwell.
"I would also like to praise a number of members of the public who stopped at the scene of the incident and helped in what ever way they could."
